Music Monday: Nathaniel Rateliff -- I've Been Failing

I sort-of mentioned these guys way back in October... but as often as they show up in my playlists, they deserve a post of their own.

Geekery: Particle Physics

One weekend awhile back, I took a trip into the fascinating and tiny world of Nuclear (sorry, Particle) Physics with Particle Fever.

It's the story of some scientists working on a little project called CERN. Which is basically a project where they fire very small stuff at each other and see what happens when they smash into each other.

CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research)

Large Hadron Collider

The movie brings up a lot of good philosophical topics like how the universe is put together and what does that mean about God and Life and everything.

But most obviously, the question: which episodes of Big Bang Theory reference the Higgs-Boson or the Large Hadron Collider?

The answer of which turns out to be:

Big Bang Theory

Season -- Episode (# of References) -- Title

1 -- 15 (2) "The Pork Chop Indeterminacy"
2 -- 1 (1) "The Bad Fish Paradigm"
2 -- 6 (1) "The Cooper–Nowitzki Theorem"
2 -- 16 (2) "The Cushion Saturation"
3 -- 7 (2) "The Guitarist Amplification"
3 -- 13 (2) "The Bozeman Reaction"
3 -- 15 (18) "The Large Hadron Collision"
5 -- 4 (4) "The Wiggly Finger Catalyst"
5 -- 21 (7) "The Hawking Excitation"
6 -- 3 (12) "The Higgs Boson Observation"
6 -- 4 (2) "The Re-Entry Minimization"
7 -- 13 (2) "The Occupation Recalibration"
7 -- 20 (1) "The Relationship Diremption"
8 -- 1 (1)  "The Locomotion Interruption"
8 -- 5 (2)  "The Focus Attenuation"

...which I found with a Python script, searching script transcripts for "cern", "higgs boson", and "collider".

Because apparently I felt my Geek Cred was in jeapordy....

In any event, the world of very small science is pretty exciting these days. Particle Fever: Highly Recommend.

Music Monday: Independence Day

Happy Birthday America!

National Anthem -- 2015 Army Navy Game

Fanfare For The Common Man -- 2009 Boston Pops

Battle Hymn of the Republic -- Mormon Tabernacle Choir

1812 Overture -- 2013 Boston Pops

Vintage Version -- 1976 Bicentennial

If international folks are ever curious about why a Russian song celebrating victory over Napolean is an integral part of America's Independence Day, there's a very simple, obvious answer: 'Merica.

Also: cannons.

But seriously: 'Merica.
